Citizens protest release of man accused of murder

Poplarville, MS (WDAM) Nearly 100 Pearl River County residents gathered in front of the courthouse in Poplarville Tuesday afternoon, protesting the release of a man accused in a weekend murder.

These photos were forwarded to us on using Send it to 7.

The pictures show dozens of protestors on the lawn of the courthouse protesting the release of Virgil Matthews.

The 31-year-old Matthews was arrested Sunday for the murder of 27-year-old Randy Prince, who was found dead after being shot in the chest at Matthews' home in the Oak Hill community.

Investigators thought they had enough evidence to hold Matthews, but Justice Court Judge Nell Cowart ruled otherwise, saying there was no probable cause to hold the suspect.

Matthews, who is white, and Prince, who is black, were acquaintances and were reportedly roommates a few weeks prior to the shooting.

Sheriff's investigators said they may present the case to a grand jury.
