Hattiesburg, MS(WDAM)-Residents in north Hattiesburg could soon have better fire protection thanks to Federal stimulus funds. The Hattiesburg fire department is hoping to build a new fire station along Hwy. 49-north. The city has applied for a grant from stimulus funds to build its ninth station.  Chief David Webster says, about $210,000,000 in stimulus money has been allocated nationwide for fire station construction. Webster says, "The city needs another station here to better serve commercial and residential growth." Building a new fire station will also improve the city's fire rating which determines insurance rates. "Along that highway 49 north corridor there's been quite a bit of commercial development we also have a lot of residential areas a little west of there and there's just a need for a station to cut our response time in those areas."
