POPLARVILLE, MS (WDAM) - A Sunday morning shooting has left one Poplarville resident dead and his accused shooter behind bars.
Pearl River County Sheriff investigators said 27-year-old Randy Prince was shot and killed during an altercation with the accused shooter.
The shooting happened around 9 a.m. Sunday at the Dakota Creek Road home of Virgil Mathews Junior. Police arrested Mathews at the scene and charged him with the murder. Investigators said the motive for the shooting is unclear, but said Prince and Mathews knew each other.
"We have some sort of altercation physical or verbal between two, possibly three individuals," said Donnie Saucier, chief investigator with the Pearl River County Seriff's Department. "The altercation resulted in a gunshot being fired in which the victim was killed."
Prince is being held in the Pearl River County Detention Center. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Jackson.
