LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Police are investigating the death of a man who was hit by a passenger train this afternoon. It happened after 4:30 p.m., near the intersection of Ellisville Boulevard and Harrison Street.

Police say the victim, a black man in his early 20's, was lying on the track, when he was struck by a southbound AMTRAK train. Officers say the train was going about 30 to 35 miles per hour when the man was hit.

"We were advised that the black male was lying down in the middle of the tracks," said Det. Earl Reed of the Laurel Police Department. "We also were advised that the conductor was blowing the horn very loudly, but the individual refused to move," Reed said.

Reed said authorities are withholding the victim's name until relatives are notified. He also said the case is being investigated as an accident, but an autopsy will be performed.
