Alleged rapist appears in court

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Bond was set at $525,000 on Friday for an alleged serial rapist accused of attacking college women during a crime spree across the Southeast.

James H. Crockett, who is accused of using a stun gun and handcuffs to subdue victims in Mississippi and Louisiana before being arrested Monday in Alabama, did not enter a plea during his initial appearance in a Hattiesburg, Miss., courtroom.

Crockett is also accused of raping a 22-year-old woman July 5 in Baton Rouge, La. He will eventually be sent back to Louisiana to face charges of aggravated rape, aggravated battery and false imprisonment in Baton Rouge and attempted aggravated assault and kidnapping in Hammond.
