Alleged rapist to appear in court

PURVIS, MS (WDAM) - Alleged serial rapist James Crockett is expected to make his initial court appearance Friday in Purvis on aggravated rape charges.

The 37-year-old Louisiana native was booked into the Lamar County jail this morning after Hattiesburg detectives retrieved him from authorities in Huntsville, Ala.

Crockett was arrested Monday night in north Alabama after a high-speed chase.

Crockett is wanted for the July 6 rape of a college student at an off-campus Hattiesburg apartment complex in Lamar County.

He is also accused of raping another college student in Baton Rouge the day before and an attempted rape of a college coed three days later in Hammond, La. In all three instances, authorities said a stun gun and handcuffs were used in the attacks.
