Police name Hattiesburg rape suspect

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a rapist.

Police allege James Harold Crokett Jr., 37, attacked and raped a woman in Hattiesburg on July 6.

Crokett is described as a white male, about 5 foot 9 inches tall weighing 185 lbs with brown hair and a goatee.

Crokett has several tattoos, and his right arm is heavily tattooed like a sleeve. Crokett was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, maroon shorts and white jogging shoes. Crokett is believed to be travelling in a maroon, 2008 GMC Sierra Truck (4-door; crew cab).

On July 6 around 8 a.m., Hattiesburg police responded to the 100 block of Park Place Drive at Park West Apartments after a reported rape.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a 21-year old female victim who claimed she had been raped inside of her apartment.

The victim said she was approached by a white male as she entered her apartment and was forced inside. The victim said she was struck several times and shocked repeatedly with some type of electrical device.

The victim said after being forced inside, she was handcuffed and raped. The victim said the man then fled the scene.

Authorities believe Crokett is also responsible for several other rapes including ones committed in Hammond, La., and Baton Rouge, La.
