Growth slowing in Lamar County

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Lamar County is known as one of the fastest growing counties in the state, but officials are preparing the next fiscal years budget for slower times.

According to County Administrator Chuck Bennett, the county is ending the year in good shape, better than anticipated, but growth throughout the county is not booming as it was in previous years.

There are still several areas where projects are being developed, and there is growth within the county's law enforcement and fire departments, Bennett said.

"We are blessed even in down times you can go by and look at buildings going up and announcements of the YMCA and all the things in that area new subdivisions," said Bennet. "We approved one in today's board meeting - another new subdivision -  so we are lucky in Lamar County and very blessed. We just have to be smart about how we use that."

The county's new fiscal year begins October 1.
