Week 72 Weight In:

Change this week:  +4 lbs
Change overall:  -91 lbs

It was amusing in an annoying now-I'm-going-to-be-late-to-work way that right after I'd had to accept the fact that I gained four pounds this week, I spilled a quart of milk all over myself and my kitchen.

The old adage "don't cry over spilt milk" immediately came to mind and made me smile in spite of myself as it was an especially fitting reminder.

I don't have a good reason for my gain this week - no injury, no vacation, no big emotional blow-out.  I was just a little lazy and a little sloppy with tracking and a little indulgent. And that's not great, but it's okay.  And it reminds me once again that this will never get easy for me.  It's doable and I fully expect to succeed and reach my goals, but watching my weight will always be a project and a struggle. 

Today starts a new week... onward!

While I was disappointed in my results this week, there was something else I was very excited about - the article I participated in for Prevention magazine has been published and I can talk about it now!

About a year ago, I answered a post on a message board that was looking for people who were stuck on diet plateaus.  At the time, I wasn't actually experiencing a plateau, but as I said in my email to Prevention, I knew I eventually would be and was looking for help to get through it.

Well, fast-forward a few months and they picked me to be part of the article - right as I was dealing with a bona fide plateau!

They put me in touch with three experts - a nutritionist, a personal trainer and a psychologist - who each gave me specific tips to follow for two months (December and January).  And after having lost and gained the same 2-3 pounds for several months prior, following their advice I lost 10 pounds and kept on going to lose 20 more (so far)!

I think plateaus are probably among the most frustrating obstacles for dieters.  You feel like you're doing everything right and trying your hardest and the scale just won't budge.  I know in the past when I've hit a plateau it's gotten to me so badly that I've typically given up and gained back everything I've lost. 

I was so thrilled to actually beat it this time and the advice from Prevention was invaluable - particularly regarding exercise and boosting my workout regime.  I had gotten a little bit complacent with my workouts and trainer Chris Freytag encouraged me to increase the duration and intensity of my cardio sessions.

I think you'll also see echoes of the psychologist's advice in my attitude as it regards going a little easier on myself and accepting that I don't have to always be perfect as I make these big lifestyle changes.
