Camp Shelby trains on motorcycles

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - Members of a Camp Shelby training unit and their families are doing some two-wheeled training to help curb the rise of fatal motorcyle accidents in the Army.

A motorcyle mentorship ride was hosted Friday by the 177th Armored Brigade, and its purpose was to help educate all motorists about motorcycle safety.

About five dozen bikes were registered for the ride, which left Friday morning from the post to Mobile, Ala.

Over the last year, more than a dozen soldiers have been killed across the country in motorcycle accidents.

Those accidents, said officials, involved riders who were properly licensed, well-educated and experienced, but were not seen by automobiles and trucks who misjudged their distance and ran into those riders.

The rides take place about once every three months.
