Kids learn to recycle and reuse

MOUNT OLIVE, MS (WDAM) - The children of the Boys and Girls Club at Mount Olive Elementary School have been busy this summer learning about the importance of recycling and reusing items - especially in this down economy.

Joan Easterling is the Unit Director for Mount Olive's Boys and Girls Club.

"Well right now it seems like we don't have a lot of resources anymore and we have to reuse things and the way the economy is it's really important to learn how to reuse things and recycle things especially to give back to the community," she said.

She added the students are also learning about energy conservation and air pollution. Another program the students are leaning about this summer is the Soles for Souls program.

That initiative accepts gently worn shoes and then disperses them to needy children around the world.

Boys and Girls Club member Wildarius Dampier said, "It gives us a chance to help other people and to go green."

Joan Easterling plans to transport all the shoes the children have collected to one of Soles for Souls drop off locations in Nashville this summer.
