Viewpoint: NCAA Regionals

Well, here we are again talking about Mississippi baseball.  Mississippi has not just one, but two, teams playing in the NCAA Super Regional Tournament.  Ole Miss in Oxford and Southern Miss in Gainesville.   This is a tribute to teams loaded with Mississippi talent and excellent coaching.  They comprise 2 of only 16 teams in the nation to advance this far.  Should either or both of them win they advance to the College World Series.  That's unbelievable.

While the home team is USM, we wish both Mississippi teams the best of luck on the field...both the Eagles and the Rebels.  Wouldn't it be something to see them face each other in the Big Game.  That would be nothing short of a miracle.

While we cheer them both on, this commentator has to go with his alma mater and home town team, retiring Coach Corky Palmer's Golden Eagles.  This is the first time for USM to advance to an NCAA Super Regional Baseball Tournament...the equivalent of basketball's sweet sixteen-and it is a true Cinderella story indeed.  2 wins away from Omaha, Nebraska and the biggest show in college baseball.

With the smallest athletic budget by far of any of the other 15 remaining teams we have to say that dollar for dollar and apples to apples, the Southern Miss Baseball Program is one of the finest in the land.  We play with the big boys and like the big boys without the big boy's money.

So we are proud of our guys in the Black and Gold and we congratulate and the boys in Crimson and Blue as well.  What a feather in this state's cap it would be if one of them brought the World Series trophy back to Mississippi.  Congratulations all around for your accomplishments thus far.
