Viewpoint: Golden Eagles Baseball

Friday when I did another commentary about USM and Ole Miss being in the final 16 teams that made the NCAA baseball super regionals, I more or less intimated that it would probably be my last word on the subject.

Wrong.

While our condolences go to our friends in Oxford for getting knocked out of the College World Series by UVA...guess what?

The Golden Eagles continued slaying giants by beating Florida in two straight games to advance to the big show for the first time in school history. USM Athletic Director, Richard Giannini dubbed it the greatest athletic feat in Southern Miss History.

No one expected retiring coach Corky Palmer's team to even make it to the regionals for a historic seventh straight time, but they did, and then they turned on the after burners.

They have now won 5 out of 6 NCAA post-season games to earn a trip to Omaha and a chance for immortality. Don't count them out. Anything can happen in baseball. Last year, Fresno State came in as a dark horse and went on to rock the collegiate baseball world by winning the world series in Omaha.

From the way they played this past weekend, Southern Miss could repeat just that kind of performance this year. Let's hope they do, they've already made Mississippi proud.

So, as the song says...let's root, root, root for the home team.

They play Sunday and truly, if they don't win it's a shame. But on the other hand, they've already proved themselves to be winners at the ole ball game.

I'm Jim Cameron...let us hear from you.

It didn’t take long for Nick Sandlin to capture another award following his return to the mound for USM. The junior was named Conference USA pitcher of the week and a Collegiate Baseball player of the week for the third time this season. Sandlin pitched 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of USM’s 8-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Junior Adam Jackson is expected to take the mound on Tuesday night when the Golden Eagles host South Alabama.

Though soft-spoken, Steven Anderson hits hard. A "violent" runner as Southern Miss teammate Keon Howard describes him, perhaps Anderson is making up for all those years spent at quarterback. "Steven runs like he doesn't want to be hit no more,” Howard said.
