HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of people in Hattiesburg had to go without power in temperatures reaching more than 100 degrees Thursday after a transformer exploded.
Fire officials said a transformer exploded near a Mississippi Power sub station around 3 p.m. near the intersection of North 31st Avenue and West 7th Street.
The explosion started a small fire, which was contained swiftly.
The explosion knocked out power throughout the USM campus and parts of Hattiesburg. People were briefly trapped in elevators at the Cook Library and the Liberal Arts Building.
Mississippi Power officials were able to quickly restore power .
