Bassfield family asks for peace

BASSFIELD, MS (WDAM) - After the murder of a 19-year-old man in Bassfield, one family is asking for peace between two feuding families.

Preston Brown was shot to death in early June, and the victim's family believes it may have been in retaliation for another murder in Bassfield September of 2007 when 23-year-old Raymond Walker was beaten to death.

Family members of Raymond Walker said the two families have been at odds for a few years, but added the violence and threats must stop before someone else is killed.

"I hope that the violence will stop," said Kristine Echols, Walker's cousin. "I hope we can reach a resolution. I hope we can find peace, and I hope that we can actually find a better better Jefferson Davis County as a whole, because we need a higher authority; we need a better system."

She added, "The way things are going now, it's only leading to a downfall in the years to come."

Calls to the family of Preston Brown were not returned.
