New hurricane contraflow guidelines

Mississippi and Louisiana officials have agreed on a major change in contraflow as a new hurricane season approaches.

Officials from both states announced the new changes Tuesday.

In the past, Louisiana residents fleeing the threat of a hurricane have been allowed to use all four lanes of I-59 as far north as Poplarville.

The new change allows the contraflow to extend 31 miles further north to mile marker 55 just south of Hattiesburg.

In addition, travelers may not be allowed to exit on Hwy 98, west on I-59 or Highway 49 north from the interstate.
