LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - An early morning fire damaged the historic Jones Middle School in Laurel.

Fire officials said the blaze began around 4 a.m. in the south wing of the facility, destroying that part of the building.

City and county firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the school, including a new section under construction.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The school year ended on Thursday.
