PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Petal city officials decided not to lay off any employees Tuesday, but layoffs will come later.
Each department received a list showing a decrease in the number of employees to be included in the budget for the next fiscal year.
Alderman James Moore said, with the city facing a deficit of more than $1 million, the only options were to lay off 20 to 25 employees immediately, borrow the money, or do nothing and let the new administration handle it.
The board will also contract with a government consultant to find out where the city stands financially. If money is borrowed, it wll be paid back over a 3-year-period.
