Richton mayor asks police chief to resign

RICHTON, MS (WDAM) - The town of Richton has a new police chief after the mayor asked the current chief to resign.

Andrew Thompson, a former Gulfport police officer was hired in December of 2008, and had been police chief in Richton until 9 p.m. Monday.

Family members said Mayor Jimmy White asked Thompson to resign.

The Richton Board of Aldermen had met two hours earlier and voted to hire former chief Bill Smith.

Family members said Thompson has not been told why he was the terminated.

Mayor White said it was a "personnel matter."
