Oprah Millionaire email is a scam says state attorney general

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Attorney General's Office has received notification from the FBI of a circulating email claiming to be from The Oprah Winfrey Show telling people they have been nominated for the "Oprah Millionaire Contest Show."

"The email is a scam," said the office in a prepared statement.

The email notifies the recipient of their nomination for The Oprah Winfrey Show - Empower Yourself - Oprah Millionaire Contest Show.  The nominations are supposedly chosen via an electronically based selection process using "their email identification module from the IRS database and AT&T database of all United States email service providers in association with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration."

To participate, recipients are requested to e-mail their contact information such as full name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Once a recipient provides their contact information, they are "verified as contestants." Then the "verified contestants" are required to provide  money supposedly to purchase airfare and a ticket to attend The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The contestants are  promised a seat for The Oprah Winfrey Show in April and asked to provide their responses to personal questions for a chance to win a million dollars.

The catch is that there is no special show nor a big prize to win.

Consumers are urged to use caution when opening emails or downloading documents from an unfamiliar source.

Individuals who receive such e-mails are encouraged to file a complaint with the FBI at www.ic3.gov.
