Two in Lamar County, including child, in critical condition following accident

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Two people, including a 2-year-old child, are in critical condition as a result of a one-car accident in Lamar county Wednesday morning.

Officials said the driver of the car apparently lost control and struck a tree at 8:30 a.m. on Old Highway 24 about a mile west of the Highway 589 intersection.

A 2-year-old boy was strapped in a carseat in the backseat, and the child's 20-year-old father was in the front seat - both were trapped inside the vehicle for a time until medics and rescue crews arrived. The child's mother, who was driving the car, was also injured.

The child was airlifted to a Jackson hospital by Baptist Life Flight.

Officials said all three were wearing seatbelts.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old mother who crashed her sport utility vehicle into the Pascagoula River with her two young children inside has died.

Tosha Caudillo apparently lost control of her SUV on Wade-Vancleave Road and plunged into about 9 feet of water Tuesday.

Several people at the scene were able to rescue the woman's two children, a 3-year-old and a toddler, along with the children's grandmother.

Preliminary indications show speed was likely a factor in the wreck.
