Jones County stolen car ring uncovered

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Jones County Sheriff's Department has uncovered a stolen car syndicate and is urging residents to be cautious about recently purchased vehicles.

At 3:15 p.m. today (Monday) at the Jones County Sheriff's Department the Jones County District Attorney's Office, Jones County Sheriff's Department and Mickey Vitt with the National Insurance Crime Bureau will explain what they are calling "a major stolen vehicle ring."

Twelve late-model vehicles have been recovered recently, many stolen in the Jackson area and configured with false identification numbers and fraudulent paperwork to make it seem as if the vehicles were registered in Jones County. Most were recovered in the Hebron and Summerland communities.

Local residents are encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Department if they believe they may have one of these vehicles, especially if they recently bought a vehicle without a title.

Arrests are expected soon.

The Sheriff's Department and District Attorney's Office "would like to forewarn those who may still have a vehicle or vehicles in their possession to turn them over immediately."

Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to please call 601-425-3147 or Jones County Crime Stoppers at 601-428-7867.
