And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”

    Conference USA announced its preseason awards on Monday, and a Southern Miss Golden Eagle was among the honorees. Senior placekicker Parker Shaunfield was named the 2018 C-USA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. Shaunfield converted the first 89 extra-point attempts of his career – which is a USM record. A 2017 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, Shaunfield converted 17-of-20 field goal attempts last season (85 percent).

    Twenty-six athletes represented Mississippi at the USA Special Olympics in Seattle, Washington this week, five of whom are from the Hub City Region. The five representatives of the Hub City returned to Hattiesburg on Saturday with 11 medals in hand, including nine gold. “It was fun,” said athlete Calandra Taylor, a three-time gold medalist.

    Jarrett Hoffpauir spent the last five years coaching baseball at Delta Charter School in Ferriday, not far from his native Vidalia, Louisiana. The Southern Miss product returns to what he calls home in Hattiesburg to take over the PCS baseball program. What Hoffpauir learned from college coaches Corky Palmer and Scott Berry about baseball, and life, he hopes to pass on to the Bobcats. "[Palmer and Berry are] still very good friends of mine,” Hoffpauir said.

    University of Southern Mississippi pitching could not keep the baseball from exiting the ballpark Sunday afternoon, and the Golden Eagles were handcuffed at the plate for a second consecutive day. As a result USM’s 2018 baseball season came to a conclusion at Baum Stadium, as the second-seeded Golden Eagles were eliminated from the Fayetteville Regional 9-4 by third-seeded Dallas Baptist University.

Kelly is an apprentice of Watkins, coaching under him since 2012 and playing for him as a high school student. Kelly was a part of Petal’s 1995 state championship team, After graduating from Petal in 1996, Kelly played baseball for Mississippi State and was eventually drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

    As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.

    Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
