    When Terry Underwood took the coaching reins at Sylva-Bay Academy, he put his players through a few physical tests to gauge strength, speed, athleticism and skills. As it turned, one of the strongest players on the team also was one of the fastest, and that’s how senior Logan Blackwell went from the offensive line blocking for the guy with the football to being the guy with the football.

First-year Pirates coach Dante Durr quickly transformed the culture of the program, as Mount Olive won its season-opener en route to a 4-6 campaign. Coach Durr wasn't the only catalyst, however. Quarterback and defensive back La'Travious McNair had a lot to do with Mount Olive's turnaround.

    "It's going to be an exciting year," said Mize senior linebacker Elijah Keyes. "I just want everybody to just know that the Mize Bulldogs, we're going to reclaim that name that we once had." Adding a fifth state title to the school's trophy case is what Mize hopes for after enduring just the second losing season (4-8) in program history last year.

    Petal had it’s winning streak stopped at three games Friday after falling to Meridian 28-21. The Panthers got the scoring going with a touchdown connection from Jordan Wilson to Natorian Watts.
