Pine Belt schools surrounded by toxic air

There's enough to worry about when sending your kids to school, now there may be another item to add to the list - toxic air.

A report by USA Today used an EPA model to track the path of industrial pollution and mapped the locations of about 128,000 schools to determine the levels of toxic chemicals outside.

Fifteen Pine Belt schools are in the top ten percentile of those surrounded by toxic air.

The worst is Earl Travillion Attendance Center, followed by Alpha Christian School, Hattiesburg High, Central Paptist School, Sacred Heart, and N.R. Burger Middle School.

Those school districts said it is an issue for every district nationwide, and the schools have no control over the quality of the air in their areas.

School districts like Hattiesburg do what they can to help air quality by changing air filters on a regular basis, officials there said.
