State legislators discuss voter id

Posted:

The Mississippi Senate voted Tuesday to let a new bill dealing with voter id and other election measures be filed.

The 35 to 14 vote was on a resolution to suspend the rules and allow the legislation to be filed past the deadline. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said the vote is a step in the right direction.

"That settlement seems to have caught fire, up here it seems to be working towards middle ground, and we had both sides of the aisle were supporting it," said Hosemann. "So a 36 to 14 vote in the Senate is really hard to get on just about anything so we were very pleased to have it come out."

This issue will now be passed on to the Senate and then the House.
