USM business developer seeks House seat

The director of the Southern Miss Business Assistance Center wants to be the next state representative from District 102.  Republican Toby Barker announced his candidacy this afternoon.

The 25-year-old Meridian native and graduate of Southern Miss says the cornerstones of his campaign are sustainable economic development, excellence in education and affordable healthcare.

The seat he is running for is currently held by Representative Lee Jarrell Davis, who is running for Forrest County supervisor.

"We just have to send someone up there who can go up there and start building seniority and represent us in a decent and honest way, and I'm looking forward to filling those shoes," said Barker, who spoke to us after he addressed about 3 dozen supporters at the Kamper Park Pavillion in Hattiesburg.

Barker has undergraduate and masters degrees from U.S.M.
