
Southern Miss students may soon be paying more for their higher education.
USM President Shelby Thames has asked the State College Board for an 11 percent tuition increase to recoup financial losses from Hurricane Katrina and to offset an unanticipated rise in utility rates.
Enrollment dropped by nearly a thousand students after Katrina, costing the school nearly $6 million in revenue.
After a brief closed-door session, the board's finance committee postponed discussions on raising tuition at any of the state's eight public universities.
