By Karrie Leggett

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Around the nation October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month and locally Mayor Johnny DuPree issued a proclamation at City Hall Monday .

Victim's advocates and the Domestic Abuse Family Shelter were present for the presentation of the proclamation. Both DuPree and Becky Sims, spokeswoman for Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, spoke on the importance of continuing to raise awareness on the crime of domestic abuse.

"Our purpose here is to raise awareness of domestic violence and to honor the victims and survivors of domestic violence," said Sims.

"About three years ago we saw the numbers and realized we really needed to do more, and that is why we instituted another program in our police department where we sent some police officers to Memphis to actually be trained on domestic violence and how to react and those kinds of things," said Mayor DuPree.

On October 21st there will be a candlelight vigil in honor of abuse victims.
