LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Residents who live in Lamar County could see an increase on their property taxes.
The Lamar County School Board approved a $71 million budget Monday night. The budget included $4 million worth of cuts, several positions not being filled, and a two percent millage increase request for the fiscal year.
Superintendent Ben Burnett said the millage increase will help the district avoid layoffs.
"The main way we were able to make this huge budget reduction was by everybody chipping in and every employee from the superintendent all the way around the board taking a pay cut," said Burnett. "So we could assure everyone would have a job. They will be getting a little bit less in their paychecks but everybody has a job and we feel like that is important."
The Hattiesburg School Board has approved a $55 million budget. On August 10th, the board is expected to request for millage increase
Laurel School District will be decrease its millage for the 2010 and 2011 school year.
