Student committee begins search for new Ole Miss mascot

OXFORD, MS (WMC-TV) - Who will be the next mascot for the Ole Miss Rebels? Will it be Admiral Ackbar, or someone else out of this world?

The Ole Miss Student Mascot Committee is working with the Ramey Agency, a Mississippi based marketing firm, to try to find the answer.

Tuesday, committee members said they will get input from focus groups, which will consists of Ole Miss supporters, students, alumni, faculty and staff.  Along the way, the committee will address concerns and solicit ideas to come up with a mascot that can represent all Ole Miss fans.

Committee members also plan to post progress reports on a new website launched last week.  Fans will also be able to submit their ideas for a new mascot at the site soon.

"Obviously the goal is to find out what everybody wants," committee member Ty New said. "This is a student led process, but we also want to hear everybody's opinion whether it's an alumni, ticket holder, or of course all the students."

The committee plans to conduct several focus groups on campus this weekend, and will hold more in the coming weeks in Jackson and other places.  To monitor the committee's progress, click here.
