NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A sister of former Congressman William Jefferson has resigned as a tax assessor in New Orleans.
Betty Jefferson and her daughter, Angela Coleman, pleaded guilty last Thursday to federal charges stemming from an alleged scheme to loot money from taxpayer-funded charities set up and controlled by the Jefferson family. As part of her plea agreement, Betty Jefferson was given 30 days to step down.
Defense attorney Eddie Castaing said Tuesday's move had nothing to do with pressure from other district assessors in New Orleans for Jefferson to quit.
Jefferson's brother, Mose Jefferson, and Renee Gill Pratt, a former City Council member and former state representative, face trial March 22.
