Hattiesburg K-9s get bullet-proof vests thanks to fund-raiser

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Police Department is adding new gear to their inventory list - bullet-proof vests for dogs.

Monday afternoon, six Hattiesburg police K-9s got new bullet proof vests, each one, worth about a $1,000.

"When someone has an idea, you hope that it comes together, you know, completely," said Hattiesburg resident Chris Cook who organized a fund raising effort to purchase the vests.

The idea came after Cook went to a K-9 competition and saw no protective gear for the four-legged officers.

"Like our officers, our K-9 units go out and perform life-threatening activities everyday," said Police Chief Frasier Bolton at a ceremony where the vests were presented on Monday.

Hattiesburg Police want to purchase heat-alert systems next which would detect sudden changes in car temperature and alert officers through a pager.

Cook will start another fund raising effort to purchase those systems.

"That way there's no danger of suffocation on the dog's part," said Cook.

Bolton said it was condemnable someone would come along and "think about our K-9s."

He added, "I'm really surprised and very grateful for this community to show up like it did, and I'm grateful for these animals too."
