Miss. offers texting for mental health help

Associated Press - January 17, 2010 1:04 PM ET

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Mental Health has added anonymous texting and e-mail to its mental health and suicide help line.

Director of constituency services Shannon Ruston says that some young adults are ashamed or intimidated by the idea of calling and speaking directly to a staff member.

She says the new "Talk About it" program provided by Ancomm will let teenagers discuss mental health issues anonymously.

The program can be accessed by visiting http://www.dmh.ms.gov and clicking on the 'Talk About It' button on the home page. After creating an account, people can send anonymous e-mails and text messages to the Helpline.

The Helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-877-210-8513.
