Hundreds remember longtime Bassfield mayor

BASSFIELD, MS (WDAM) - Family, friends, and many state and local officials turned out Saturday to say goodbye to long time Bassfield Mayor Buford Blount.

The 87 -year-old Blount died Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack at his home. 

Blount had been elected to his ninth term earlier this year and was in his 36th year as mayor.  He was believed to be the state's oldest living mayor and also the longest serving. 

Blount was a native of Bassfield and returned to his hometown after serving for 28 years in the Air Force. 

He is survived by his wife Cecil, a son, and three daughters.

A special election to find Blount's successor will be held In February.
