Associated Press - December 16, 2009 9:44 PM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Education reform advocate and nonprofit founder Leslie Jacobs has dropped her bid to replace Ray Nagin as mayor of the City of New Orleans.

Jacobs, on Wednesday, said while she believes she would be a great mayor, she has determined after a careful analysis of the field that she "can not win this election."

As recently as Monday, Jacobs talked about her willingness to spend as much as $1 million of her own money to fund a mayoral bid. She had been raising her profile in the city for the last several months leading up to the December qualifying period that drew 13 candidates, including Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, whose entry onto the Feb. 6 ballot was a surprise.

Before then, Jacobs was seen as a formidible candidate and a viable option for making a March runoff.
