Franklin Co. to celebrate bicentennial next week

Associated Press - December 14, 2009 8:04 AM ET

MEADVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Franklin County will celebrate its bicentennial on Monday, exactly 200 years after its formation by the Mississippi Territorial authorities on Dec. 21, 1809.

The county was formed eight years before Mississippi was awarded statehood in 1817.

The official opening ceremony for the celebration of southwest Mississippi county will be held at the Franklin County Courthouse in Meadville.

A bicentennial committee is planning a festival in March 2010, when the weather will permit outdoor activities.

Chancery Judge Debbra Halford said the celebrations are a way to show appreciation for all that was done by people throughout the history of the county.
