Josh Myers ran for 230 yards and Bassfield High School ran over Ackerman High 27-13 to win the MHSAA Class 2A state championship game Friday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Yellowjackets (14-2) dominated the second half, scoring 20 unanswered points by gashing the Indians (15-1) with a fierce ground attack. Bassfield, which won its fourth state title, ran for 389 yards on 48 rushes. Myers scored twice during his 21-carry performance and averaged 11 yards a rush.
But the biggest play of the game may have come early in the fourth quarter from Bassfield safety Wilbur Myers. Trailing 20-13, Ackerman marched to the Bassfield 10-yard line. Myers picked off Ackerman quarterback Andrew Furr in the end zone. Minutes later, Dominic Island ran in from 3 yards out to seal the deal.
Ackerman had taken a 13-7 lead as time expired in the first half when Furr found John Cummings for a 46-yard score. But Myers' 3-yard touchdown run with 6:36 left in the third quarter tied the game. The extra point gave Bassfield its first lead. Bassfield's Carvey Magee found Jeremy Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown 3 minutes later to make it 20-13 Yellowjackets.
Bassfield's only losses this season have come to Class 4A Forrest County AHS and Class 6A south champ Oak Grove. Ackerman was denied a third state championship.
