SOSO, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County woman and her son are homeless tonight after a fire destroyed their house in Soso early this morning. Ellen Sullivan's home on Shady Oak Road went up in flames about 2:30 a.m.

Volunteer firefighters from Soso and 3 other departments responded to the blaze, but were unable to save the house.  The cause of the fire was an electric heater in the home's utility room.

"We tried to put it out," said Sullivan. "The smoke was coming, and it had gotten into a basket of clothes and we tried to put it out and we couldn't handle the smoke anymore and by the time we got out, it had already exploded into a big fire," she said. "You don't know what to think, when you see everything you work for all your life go up in smoke. You just have to be careful, you just have to be careful," Sullivan said.

The fire at the Sullivan home is the 9th structure fire in Jones County's District-1 since Tuesday and the 5th in the last 24 hours.
