PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) - The city of Picayune is taking steps to annex the local airport.
The city council approved the annexation this past week. An annexation petition must now be filed in Pearl River County Chancery Court for approval.
City Councilman Wayne Gouguet says the move is a a logical business decision considering the city already provides city services, such as water and natural gas.
The Picayune Item reports that the city fire and police departments already conduct some work and patrols in the area.
Law enforcement is now provided by the county sheriff's department.
The Picayune Fire Department maintains a large water pump at the airport, but if there's a fire the Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department is the primary responder. Picayune firefighters act as backup.
