Barbour announces blues marker for Woodville

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Gov. Haley Barbour has announced the site of the next Mississippi Blues Trail marker.

Barbour says a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Woodville in Wilkinson County to honor the town's blues traditions.

Barbour says the area is being recognized for the outstanding artists that perfected their styles while being a part of the local music scene. Those artists include William Grant Still, the first black person to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, among other achievements.

Barbour says the Woodville Blues marker will be near the African-American Museum allowing visitors to learn about other honored musicians, including saxophonist Lester Young and bluesmen Scott Dunbar and Robert Cage.

The Mississippi Blues Trail is part of the state's effort to promote tourism.
