COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - The city of Columbia will soon start searching for a new police chief.
Former police Chief Joe Van Parkman resigned Tuesday and Major Clem Evans was fired after the board of aldermen decided not to keep them on the force.
Major John Wayne Tolar has taken over as the interim police chief. Tolar was laid off last month as part of budget cuts.
Columbia Mayor Reed Houston says the board of alderman will start advertising for the job next week.
He also says the board will search for someone to fill the position outside of Marion County. Houston has not put a time table on the search because he says he wants the city wants to make sure the right person is chosen.
