Wal-Mart kicks off holiday shopping season early in 2009

(NBC) - The holiday shopping season usually kicks off the day after Thanksgiving, but Wal-Mart decided to start the sales right now.

The retail giant kicked off holiday shopping a few months early offering 100 different toys, from Tonka cars to Barbies and board games. They're all selling for $10 each.

The company wants to tempt shoppers like Janna Gill.

"We have a family of five, and then extended family is huge," said Gill.

Gill already started her Christmas shopping, but admits she's watching her wallet.

"Of course we've cut back, and we're not buying the monstrous toys that we used to buy. We buy one for the kids to share, and then several for the little ones," Gill said.

With a rough economy, Wal-Mart is banking on shoppers buying early.

"You do $10 here and $10 there, you don't really feel it rather than doing it all at once. Once you do it all at once, you have this big lump sum on top of your bills, so it's kind of hard," said shopper Daisy Mendoza.
