HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Five needy families will soon have homes of their own as part of the largest single building project ever organized by the Hattiesburg-area Habitat for Humanity.
The homes will be built on Edwards Street, as part of the "Celeste Place" subdivision.
Five homes will be built in one weekend, on Sept. 25-27. Volunteers will work with home recipients to construct the houses. Thursday, a ground blessing ceremony was held, with prayers of thanks offered by several local ministers.
"The whole point of this blessing this morning is for the leadership of all of the congregations to come together to set the tone, not only to just bless the site and give it back to God, but to also start building," said Andrea Dixon, executive director for the Hattiesburg-Area Habitat for Humanity.
After the ceremony, many of the ministers who attended helped construct frames for some of the homes. Dixon says about 1,000 volunteers from 16 area churches are expected to work on the project.
