NEW ALBANY, Miss. (AP) - A 22-year-old volunteer firefighter remained jailed Monday on one count of capital murder and two counts of arson after a weekend house fire killed an elderly woman in Union County.

Officials say William Cody Lambert will make an initial court appearance this week to face the charges.

Lambert is from the Guntown community in Lee County. Union County Sheriff's Department Investigator Roger Garner says Lambert works with three volunteer fire departments.

Garner says two house fires, about a mile apart, were reported about shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.

1 of the burning houses in the Alpine community was abandoned and the other belonged to 88-year-old Myrtle Mae Owen, who was home. Coroner Mark Golding says Owen's body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
