NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes is joining other Roman Catholic leaders critical of Notre Dame University's decision to award President Obama an honorary degree next month.
Obama favors abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research, policies vigorously opposed by the Roman Catholic Church. And his administration recently suspended federal "conscience rules" that had shielded some health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions on the basis of religious beliefs.
So the Catholic university's decision to honor the president at coming graduation ceremonies has caused a furor.
A spokeswoman for the archdiocese says Hughes believes the invitation to Obama clearly goes against Catholic policy against honoring politicians who favor abortion rights.
