Lady Bobcats’ Sikes honored after opening week

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) _ Jones College first baseman McKennah Sikes started the 2019 softball season off with a bang.

The sophomore from Van Buren, Ark., hit .786 (11-of-14) with three home runs, three doubles and five singles in four games at the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala. She drove in 10 runs and scored four times. .

That performance not only earned Sikes the top weekly honor from the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges but also national recognition as the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II “Player of the Week.”

Sikes opening weekend included:

  • Double, two singles, two RBIs in an 8-2 win over Walters State
  • Home run, double, single, four RBIs in an 8-2 win over No. Illinois Central
  • Two home runs, single, three RBIs in an 8-6 loss to Wallace State
  • Double, single, RBI in 5-2 loss to Motlow State

JC’s home-opening doubleheader scheduled for Friday has been cancelled because of expected inclement weather, but the Lady Bobcats quickly invited three teams and will play two games Sunday, starting at noon with Northwest Florida State College.
