Petal man sentenced for possession of firearm by felon

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A judge sentenced a Petal man to more than five years in prison on Monday after he pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst announced that 43-year-old Christopher Columbus Kennedy was sentenced to 66 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. Kennedy was also ordered to pay a $4,000 fine.

Kennedy was stopped by a narcotics officer with the Gulfport Police Department on Oct. 1, 2018. The officer smelled marijuana in the car and found a handgun with seven rounds of ammunition near the driver’s seat with marijuana, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

According to Hurst, Kennedy had previously been convicted for possessing crack cocaine with intent to distribute. He was indicted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on Oct. 23, 2018, and pleaded guilty on Nov. 16, 2018.
