USM softball sweeps own tournament

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ The University of Southern Mississippi outscored the opposition 47-12 over the weekend to win all five of its softball games over the weekend in the Black and Gold Invitational.

Junior Abby Trahan, who was named Softball America’s list of top 100 players in the country, picked up a pair of complete-game wins, while junior Bailie Springfield and freshmen Makenna Pierce and Kaylan Ladner each earned a victory.

Friday

Southern Miss 9, Houston Baptist 0

Trahan scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three to earn her first win in a Lady Eagles’ uniform.

Senior second baseman Chase Nelson and sophomore outfielder Destini Brown combined for four hits in six at-bats with a walk, score five runs and drive in another. Senior first baseman Sarah Van Schiak hit s two-run double and sophomore outfielder Heather Hill smacked a solo home run.

Southern Miss 12, Central Arkansas 4

The Lady Eagles collected 14 hits, including three hits, two runs and two RBIs from sophomore third baseman Alyssa Davis. Van Schiak, Nelson, Brown and senior catcher Samantha Rapp each had t6wo hits.

Pierce allowed three runs (one earned) in five innings, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out two. Ladner came in to pitch an inning, allowing a run on a hit while walking one and striking out one.

Saturday

Southern Miss 8, Tennessee Tech 6

Trahan got touched for six runs, though only two were earned, in the five-inning, complete game. She allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six.

Freshman outfielder Madison Rayner had a big game at the plate, swatting a solo home run for the Lady Eagles’ first run and then putting USM up 7-2 with a two-run single three innings later.

Southern Miss 9, Houston Baptist 0

Ladner made the most of the first start of her career, allowing a run on two hits in a five-inning, complete-game effort. She struck out three.

Junior shortstop Lacey Summerlin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Rayner swatted a two-run double.

Sunday

Southern Miss 9, Jackson State 1

Springfield retired the first 14 batters she faced before allowing Nava Fisher’s solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Tigers’ lone hit produced their lone run as Springfield walked none, struck out three.

Nelson went 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple, scoring twice and knocking in a run. Papp was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The Lady Eagles will take to the road for the first time this season, taking on Nicholls State University at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Thibodaux, La.
