LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Lamar County deputies have arrested a 13-year-old on a charge of simple assault for allegedly shooting a runner on the Longleaf Trace with a BB gun or air rifle.

Sheriff Danny Rigel said his department has been investigating since Grover Brown was shot in the arm on Jan. 31. Rigel said patrols in the area have also been increased.

Brown is a member of the local running group Pine Belt Pacers. He said he was running on the trace that Thursday when he felt a stinging in his right arm.

Brown said at first he thought he may have been hit by a paintball, but then he saw the blood. Still, Brown continued on with his running routine.

Brown said he did file a report with the sheriff’s department. He added that he runs the trace regularly and has never felt unsafe.

But, Brown said runners should always be aware of their surroundings and run with a partner if possible.

Rigel said the teen charged in the case is now in juvenile lockup and the case has been turned over to Lamar County Youth Court.
